Where there is no obligation to provide both, content may appear in one official language only. Information in a language other than English or French is offered only for the convenience of our visitors.

Linking to other websites

Links to websites not under the Centre’s control, including our social media accounts, are provided for convenience only. We are not responsible for the accuracy, currency, or reliability of their content, and a link is not an endorsement. Those sites are not subject to the Official Languages Act, and visitors should review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

Copyright and reproduction

Material on this site is covered by the Copyright Act and related Canadian law and international agreements. Unless otherwise stated, you may not reproduce it, in whole or in part, for commercial redistribution without prior written permission from the NSCOESN. Some content may be subject to another party’s copyright; where that is so, it is noted on the relevant page.

Comments and interaction

On our social media accounts we ask that comments stay relevant and respectful. We reserve the right to edit or remove comments, and to block and report users, in cases that include:

personal information;

content contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;

racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, or threatening messages;

serious, unproven, or inaccurate accusations against people or organisations;

aggressive, obscene, or pornographic content;

content that is abusive to a person or organisation;

posts not by the author, or made for advertising;

encouragement of illegal activity;

announcements from labour or political organisations;

a language other than English or French;

unintelligible, irrelevant, repetitive, or spam content.

Views expressed by users commenting on our accounts do not necessarily represent those of the NSCOESN.

Privacy

The Centre is committed to a website that respects visitors’ privacy. When personal information is collected, you will be told why, and how to access it.

Web servers automatically record certain information about a visit, including the visitor’s IP address, the pages visited, and the date and time. An IP address on its own does not identify an individual, but in some circumstances it could, so the Centre treats it as personal information. We do not otherwise gather your name, telephone number, or email address unless you supply it, for example by email or by completing a form.

If you email us or submit a form, your personal information is used to respond to your inquiry and manage your membership. It is not shared with any other institution. Email and other electronic messages are not secure unless a page states otherwise, so please do not send sensitive personal information by non-secure means.

Third-party social media

Our social media presence is an extension of our website, hosted by third parties rather than on NSCOESN servers. If you interact with us there, read those providers’ terms and privacy policies. We use Facebook, X, and LinkedIn. Information you provide through these accounts may be used to respond to inquiries or for statistical and reporting purposes.

Cookies and analytics

Cookies help us understand how visitors use the site and remember your language preference. Session cookies support secure functions and are discarded when you close your browser; persistent cookies remain until they expire. We use Google Analytics with a truncated IP address to compile anonymous, aggregate traffic statistics; no identifying information is recorded. You may set your browser to refuse cookies, or use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, though some functions may be affected.

Website security

The Centre monitors network traffic to detect unauthorised attempts to change information or damage the site, recording the IP address, date and time, and pages visited. We do not link these to individuals unless an attempt to damage the site is detected. Such information may be shared with law enforcement where criminal activity is suspected, and used for security, audit, evaluation, and reporting.

Questions

Questions or complaints about how we administer privacy across our web presence may be directed to us through our contact form.

Official languages The Official Languages Act and its regulations set out when we use both English and French to communicate with the public.
